Canadian Town Wins World's Best Tap Water Award

Judges Sipped And Swished H2O From Around The Globe

BERKELEY SPRINGS, West Virginia, 3:16 p.m. EST February 25, 2001 -- A Canadian town has some of the tastiest tap water in the world -- and the title to prove it.

Judges at yesterday's International Water Tasting competition picked water from Amos, Quebec as the most drinkable.

The town was chosen from among about 60 contestants who entered the municipal category.

Simply Natural Canadian Spring Water of Dorion, Ontario, was toasted the best uncarbonated bottled water, beating three dozen competitors.

Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water of Vergeze, France, won the title of best sparkling water.

Claire Baie Bottled Water from Oak Creek, Wisconsin won the new category of purified drinking water, which had just five entries.

The final award, best packaging, went to Obi Zulol, Republic of Tajikistan. Judges studied the water for clarity, sniffed for odours, then sipped and swished for flavour.

The competition took place in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
